"SlickMcRick" (slickmcrick)

The title speaks for itself. After years of driving cars for some reason I have come to love pick up trucks. Maybe its the ride or the way people move out of your way on the highway when they see an imposing vehicle coming their direction, I'm not sure. So now I need one in my life. I'm hoping to purchase one no later than October. Also looking to spend around $3k. What are some decent trucks around that price?

S10 or a truck of that size would be your best bet for this price range. Your price range means that full size trucks will be very high mileage. I have seen 70's era trucks for that low and in fairly good shape. Expect higher maintenance needs in this price range for 4x4.

I wish I could help, but my only truck knowledge is very slim.

Wow don't know how I feel about that lol. I kind of have a thing for the early 90's Fords. And I'm hauling moderate loads.

best bet it's probably small trucks rangers, s10s, etc. If you're knowledgeable enough you can find some well maintained high mileage full size trucks. That's the route I went. Bought a 93 f150 with a straight 6 and 200k on the clock but runs like a top and no sign of slowing down

Dakotas can be found pretty cheap. I'm also biased but they're the smallest trucks you can get with a V8, decent offroad capability (for an IFS) and manual transmission was available on all engines through 2006.

Thanks. I've seen a few decent full sizes. I'm weary of automatics though. It seems many of them are starting to slip so I'm sticking with a manual.

You'll run into that with full sizes. They don't give them away.

Before I started researching trucks never knew about the legendary straight 6. I've read nothing but great reviews on it. I'm sort of biased towards the 302 v8 though. The sound is intoxicating and parts are plentiful.

You know what...Dakotas never crossed my mind. How are the 90s Dodge trucks reliability?

I bought my 1995 for nine hundred bucks, because the PO thought he totaled it. A new left rear axle shaft and a front control arm mount re-weld, now it runs and handles like a fuckin TOP. 190k miles and no engine problems except for a belly pan gasket (standard problem on Magnum engines, easy fix). I get achingly close to 20 mpg, mostly city driving. The interior is spartan and the dash creaks when I hit bumps, but it's a '90s Chrysler product. The paint is crap, but it's a '90s Chrysler product. I love this truck.

For $10k? Crack Pipe all the way bro. Time to go stare at something else. Just checked auto trader in your area and there are billion(slight exaggeration) trucks to choose from.

I used to want an older truck but after watching this I'm not so sure.

I see that and raise you this.
P.S. I have no plan to purchase any generation of this F150.

S10/Sonoma or Silverado/Sierra. At $3k you'll be looking at mostly 90s Silverados and pretty much any year of S10.
They will run forever if you take good care of them.
You want a 4.3L V6 in the S10/Sonoma and the 5.7L V8 in Sierra/Silverado.
I'm warning you right now though, they don't get great gas mileage.

It's a toyota, of course it's a CP. What's crazy is this is the only sub 10k manual 4wd tundra I can find.

Gas mileage won't be too much an issue. As long as I can get in the high teens on the highway I'm fine with that. Going to get an older Accord for commuting duties once I do a few side jobs with the truck.

If you're only expecting high teens, you should be fine then.

For around $3k, you're looking at high mileage Rams and F-150s or 90's Silverados. Look for extensive wheelwell rust and check if bondo. Check for oil or coolant leaks. see if heat and A/C work. Make sure all the turning signals and backup light work. Any other electrical crap.
At $3K though, the best bang for you buck is going to the a smaller truck: S-10 or Ranger

How much cargo can those smaller trucks hold in there bed though? I plan on using my truck to haul furniture from time to time. And thanks for those tips.

These trucks should be fine with those duties. Just make sure you inspect the suspension from time to time if it's constant hauling and/or towing

What's with the S10 love? They can be a good value but if I had to work on something (eventually, as implied by budget), I'd much rather work on a Ranger. Easier to get to things in the engine bay, better interior, look better imo.
GM's GMT400 chassis is almost always a safe bet, or an early to mid 90s F150 with the 300-6.
